Special Treatment for Brain Injury Recovery
 | Lori McMillin, Director of the RehabCare Program

Brain injuries are a leading cause
of disability in the U.S. "Treating
and rehabilitating brain injury
survivors takes special skills, training
and experience, because in addition to
physical limitations, patients also may
be dealing with cognitive and behavioral
issues related to the injury," says
Lori McMillin, Director of the
RehabCare Program at St. Mary's
Regional Medical Center.
Ms. McMillin also is President of the Brain Injury
Association of Oklahoma, an advocacy organization
for brain injury survivors. Under her leadership, the
RehabCare Program at St. Mary's has developed one of
the only inpatient rehabilitation programs for brain injury
patients in Oklahoma that is accredited by the Commission
on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
At the RehabCare facility, brain injury patients have
access to special rooms with features that allow the staff
to control the environment to meet their needs. Camera
systems provide 24-hour monitoring, if needed, and
enclosed beds are available to help prevent patients from
falling out. Patients receive intensive, customized services,
including training for motor skills and the activities of daily
living and behavioral intervention.
"Last year, we cared for almost 50 traumatic and
nontraumatic brain injury patients, some of whom came
from across the country," Ms. McMillin says.
