Head Off Serious Injuries

Photo of a family riding bikes together
With the increasing popularity of skateboarding, riding scooters, in-line skating and biking, more children than ever are on wheels today. Adults enjoy many of these activities, too. However, this increased activity means more people are at risk for head injuries.

Wearing a helmet provides protection against such injuries, but it can't always prevent them. However, a helmet can prevent head injuries from being potentially more serious.

Head injury Checklist
Warning signs of a serious head injury include:

  • Confusion
  • Agitation
  • Repetitive questioning
  • Memory loss
  • Vomiting
  • Severe headache
  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Clear or bloody drainage from the ear or nose
  • Weakness or paralysis
  • Loss of balance
If someone exhibits any of these danger signs after a head injury, call 911 or take that person immediately to the Emergency Department (ED) to be evaluated and treated.

Act Quickly
Head injuries can range from mild forms, including concussion, to severe head trauma like bleeding of the brain or a broken skull. In the ED, trained physicians and staff can use equipment to quickly identify and treat head injuries.

Head trauma can be a life-threatening condition. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential.
