Your Blood Donation Goes a Long Way

You may be helping up to 10 people every time you give blood, says St. Mary's Transfusion Services Coordinator Paula Howard. "Donor blood is broken down into separate components, including red cells, platelets and plasma, which are used to treat multiple patients," she says.

The Transfusion Services Center at St. Mary's (known as the Blood Bank) screens patients who need blood and prepares customized transfusions with exactly the components they need.

The donation process is simple, but the requirements for blood donors have become stricter. That's why it's vital that people who can donate do so frequently. "Healthy individuals can donate every eight weeks," Ms. Howard says.
