Learn How to Be a Hero
Consider learning potentially lifesaving skills at St. Mary's.
You could help
someone during a medical emergency. Classes include:
- CPR for adults, children and infants
- Using an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Rescuing someone who is choking
Classes follow American Heart Association guidelines and last about two-and-one-half hours. St. Mary's nurses and respiratory therapists provide one-on-one
instruction and help students fine-tune their techniques as they practice on
mannequins. Hundreds of people, including nurses, physicians, Boy and Girl
Scouts, babysitters, new parents and senior citizens have trained in these classes.
"You never know when you may use these skills," says Staff Development
Manager Carolyn Ellis, who oversees the classes. She's known many students
who became unexpected heroes, like one
woman who resuscitated a friend who
collapsed in a restaurant.
"You may think that you won't remember
what to do in an emergency, but if you know
the basic steps and practice them, they'll
come back to you," she says.
Classes for up to 16 people, age 11 and
older, are held at least twice each month.
Groups may be able to arrange their own
class times, and individual training sessions
are available.
